NACHU’s vast membership of housing cooperatives comes from both rural and urban areas. This largely includes Kenyans within the low and modest income bracket, often involved in the informal sector (small and medium businesses, agri-business, casual workers, etc.).
- NACHU works with people who are

- landless or homeless
- tenants who lack security of tenure
- making inadequate income
- under threat of eviction
- unable to access affordable finance and technical services
- living in unsafe and overcrowded environments, such as informal settlements.
NACHU’s membership extends throughout seven regions of the country including: Nairobi, Western, Nyanza, Coast, Eastern, Mount Kenya and Rift Valley.
How to Become a NACHU Member:
- To register with NACHU, groups must register as a primary housing cooperative with the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing.
To register a cooperative, groups require a minimum of 11 members, four copies of the by laws (which NACHU will provide) and a bankers cheque for Kshs 3,500 which is payable to the Commissioner of Cooperative Development and Marketing. - Affiliation Fees: Once a society is registered as a housing cooperative, they can become affiliated with NACHU by paying a non-refundable membership fee of Kshs 2,500 and purchasing refundable shares worth Kshs 10,000. After these fees are paid, a cooperative is now eligible to start saving with NACHU.
- Note: Member cooperatives are independent and not managed by NACHU. Societies are free to govern themselves according to cooperative by laws and seek support and guidance from NACHU as necessary. NACHU provides training sessions on good governance and cooperative management to empower groups to reach their full potential.
